Which USDT Network Should You Use to Buy Gold? TRC-20 vs ERC-20 vs BEP-20 vs Solana vs Polygon

For most gold purchases, USDT on Solana, Polygon or BNB Smart Chain is the cheapest to send, Tron (TRC-20) is the most widely supported, and Ethereum (ERC-20) is the most expensive. All five settle in seconds to a few minutes. The one rule that matters: send on exactly the network you selected at checkout, because a token sent on the wrong chain can be lost.
Same dollar, different rails
USDT is one token issued on many blockchains. A dollar of USDT on Tron and a dollar on Ethereum are worth the same, but they live on separate networks with their own fees, speeds and address formats. When you buy gold with USDT, the dealer gives you an address on one specific network. Your wallet or exchange has to send on that same network.
The five networks compared
| Network | Token standard | Typical fee to send USDT | Time to confirm | Address starts with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tron | TRC-20 | about $1–3 (less if you hold or rent energy) | ~1 minute | T |
| Ethereum | ERC-20 | $0.20 off-peak to several dollars at busy times | 1–3 minutes | 0x |
| BNB Smart Chain | BEP-20 | a few cents | under 1 minute | 0x |
| Polygon | Polygon PoS | around a cent | under 1 minute | 0x |
| Solana | SPL | well under a cent | seconds | base58, no prefix |
Fees are network costs paid to validators, not to the dealer, and they move with demand. The figures above are typical ranges as of late 2026; check a block explorer (Tronscan, Etherscan, BscScan, Polygonscan, Solscan) for the current figure. Exchanges charge their own withdrawal fee on top, which can be higher than the network fee.
Which one to pick for a gold order
- Lowest cost: Solana or Polygon. On a $2,000 order the fee is a rounding error.
- Holding USDT on an exchange: use whichever network has the lowest withdrawal fee there. Tron and BNB Chain are often cheapest on large exchanges.
- Holding USDT in MetaMask or another EVM wallet: BNB Chain or Polygon if your balance is there; avoid bridging just for one payment.
- Avoid ERC-20 for small orders when the network is busy; the fee can be a noticeable share of the order.
Confirmations
At BTC Mints, payments on Ethereum, BNB Chain and Polygon are treated as final after 3 block confirmations; Tron and Solana payments once the network has finalised them. In practice that is a minute or two. Your order is allocated as soon as the payment confirms, and in-stock items dispatch within one business day.
Mistakes that lose money
- Wrong network. Sending BEP-20 USDT to a Tron address, or ERC-20 to a Solana address. Ethereum, BNB Chain and Polygon addresses all start with 0x and look identical, so double-check the network name, not just the address.
- Missing gas token. You need a little of the native coin to send USDT: TRX on Tron, ETH on Ethereum, BNB on BNB Chain, POL on Polygon, SOL on Solana.
- USDC instead of USDT. They are different tokens. Pick the one you are actually sending at checkout; BTC Mints accepts both on several networks.
- Sending the fee out of the amount. Exchanges often deduct their withdrawal fee from the amount sent. Add it on top so the dealer receives the full figure.
Why swap USDT for gold at all
A stablecoin is a claim on its issuer's reserves and can be frozen at the contract level. Physical gold is no one's liability. Holders often keep USDT for trading and move part of it into metal they hold themselves. Start with liquid coins such as Maple Leafs or 1 oz gold bars, and compare against live spot prices.
