Is Swapping Bitcoin for Gold Taxable? US, UK and EU Rules Explained

In the US, UK and most EU countries, paying for gold with Bitcoin counts as disposing of the Bitcoin, so any gain since you acquired it is taxable at that moment. The gold then has its own cost basis, equal to its value on the day you bought it. Rules on the gold side differ: the US taxes bullion gains as collectibles, the UK exempts Britannia and Sovereign coins from capital gains tax, and investment gold is VAT-free across the EU. This is general information, not tax advice.
The core idea: a swap is two transactions
Tax authorities don't see "swapping" BTC for gold. They see you selling Bitcoin for its market value and using the proceeds to buy metal. The gain on the Bitcoin is its value at the time of the purchase minus what you originally paid for it. The cost basis of your gold is what you paid for it in your local currency on that day.
United States
- Crypto side: the IRS treats digital assets as property. Using BTC to buy gold is a sale reported on Form 8949, with short- or long-term rates depending on whether you held the Bitcoin more than a year.
- Gold side: physical gold and silver bullion are collectibles. Long-term gains when you later sell are taxed at your ordinary rate, capped at 28%, rather than the usual 0/15/20% long-term rates.
- Reporting: custodial brokers now issue Form 1099-DA for digital asset sales. Payments from your own wallet to a merchant are still yours to report.
- Dealer reporting: see do gold dealers report to the IRS for which sales trigger Form 1099-B or Form 8300.
United Kingdom
- Crypto side: HMRC treats spending crypto as a disposal for capital gains tax. Gains above the annual exempt amount (£3,000 for 2026/27) are taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income. Costs are tracked with the Section 104 pooling rules.
- Gold side: UK legal-tender coins, the gold Britannia and the Sovereign, are exempt from capital gains tax, so future gains on them are tax-free. Other coins and bars, such as Krugerrands or PAMP bars, are chargeable assets.
- VAT: investment gold is VAT-exempt. Silver bought in the UK carries 20% VAT, which is one reason many UK buyers favour gold.
- Practical effect: moving BTC gains into gold Britannias crystallises the crypto gain now, but shelters future growth on the gold.
European Union
VAT is harmonised: investment gold (bars of at least 99.5% purity and qualifying bullion coins) is exempt from VAT across the EU. Income tax on the crypto disposal and on later gold sales is national, and varies a lot:
- Germany: private sales of both crypto and physical gold are tax-free after a holding period of more than one year. Gains within a year are taxed as income above a small annual threshold.
- France: crypto disposals are taxed at a flat rate; gold sales can fall under a specific precious-metals tax or the capital-gains regime, at the seller's choice in many cases.
- Netherlands: no tax on individual sales; both crypto and gold count toward the annual wealth (box 3) assessment.
- Elsewhere: check your national rules; several countries exempt long-held assets.
Records to keep
- The date, amount and cost of the Bitcoin (or other coin) you spent.
- The order confirmation showing the USD price and the BTC amount paid.
- The transaction ID from your wallet.
- The exchange rate to your local currency on the purchase date.
- For later sales of the gold: the buyback or sale receipt.
Spot figures in your records can be cross-checked against live prices in USD, EUR and GBP and the gold price in Bitcoin on the day you buy.
Does a gold coin or bar make a difference?
Sometimes. In the UK, Britannias and Sovereigns are CGT-exempt and bars are not. In the US, every bullion product is a collectible. In the EU, only investment-grade gold is VAT-free, so numismatic coins with high premiums may carry VAT. See is gold tax-free? for a country-by-country look at the gold side.
