American Gold Eagle Value 2026: Price by Size and Why It Is 22 Karat

A 1 oz American Gold Eagle is worth about $4,126.13 as of 8 August 2026, with gold at $4,343.30 per troy ounce. The Eagle is 22 karat rather than 24, which regularly leads buyers to think they are getting less metal. They are not: every 1 oz Eagle contains a full troy ounce of pure gold, with copper and silver added on top for durability, bringing the coin to about 33.93 grams gross. It is the best-selling gold bullion coin in the United States and the only one minted from gold the US Treasury sources domestically. This guide gives current prices at all four sizes, explains the alloy, and compares it with the 24 karat Buffalo struck by the same mint.
How much is a 1 oz American Gold Eagle worth today?
About $4,126.13 on 8 August 2026, at a spot price of $4,343.30 per troy ounce — roughly €3,584.46 or £3,070.13. Because the Eagle holds exactly one troy ounce of fine gold, its melt value tracks spot one for one. The formula does not go stale: 1 oz Eagle value = gold spot per ounce. Gold trades continuously, so check a live price before you buy.
What does each American Gold Eagle size cost?
The Eagle is the only major bullion series minted in four sizes from launch, each with its own legal-tender face value. Current prices from stock:
| Size | Fine gold | Face value | Price | Cost per fine ounce |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/10 oz | 0.100 oz | $5 | $412.61 | $4,126.10 |
| 1/4 oz | 0.250 oz | $10 | $1,031.53 | $4,126.12 |
| 1/2 oz | 0.500 oz | $25 | $2,063.07 | $4,126.14 |
| 1 oz | 1.000 oz | $50 | $4,126.13 | $4,126.13 |
That per-ounce gap is the central trade-off in fractional bullion. The 1 oz coin gives you the most gold per dollar; the tenth-ounce buys divisibility — the ability to sell a small slice without breaking up a large holding. Our fractional gold coins guide works through when that flexibility is worth paying for.
Why is the American Gold Eagle only 22 karat?
Because it was designed to be handled, not hoarded in a vault. The Eagle uses a 22 karat alloy — 91.67 percent gold, with copper and silver making up the balance — a specification borrowed from the historic crown gold standard used in British and American coinage for centuries. The critical point is that the alloy is added to a full ounce of gold rather than substituted for part of it. A 1 oz Eagle weighs about 33.93 grams gross and contains 31.1035 grams of pure gold. You are buying one ounce of gold either way. What the copper buys you is a coin that resists scratches, dings and the milk spotting that plagues softer 999.9 issues, which matters if you actually handle your metal.
American Gold Eagle or American Gold Buffalo?
Both are struck by the United States Mint, both carry a $50 face value, and both contain exactly one troy ounce of fine gold. The difference is the alloy:
| Gold Eagle | Gold Buffalo | |
|---|---|---|
| Purity | 22k (91.67%) | 24k (99.99%) |
| Gross weight | 33.93 g | 31.10 g |
| Fine gold | 1 troy oz | 1 troy oz |
| Sizes minted | 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 oz | 1 oz |
| Durability | Excellent — alloy resists marks | Softer, marks more easily |
| Price today | $4,126.13 | $4,126.13 |
If you want fractional sizes or a coin that survives handling, take the Eagle. If you want maximum purity in a US coin — and some buyers need 24 karat for specific purposes — take the Buffalo. On pure bullion value there is nothing between them.
Are older American Gold Eagles worth more?
For ordinary bullion coins, no. A 2022 Eagle and a 2026 Eagle contain identical gold and trade at the same price, which is why we list 2022, 2026 and random-year coins at the same figure. Two exceptions carry genuine premiums: professionally graded coins such as the MS69, and pre-2021 coins bearing the original Miley Busiek reverse, which was redesigned in 2021. For straightforward accumulation, buy on price per ounce and let us pick the year — you are buying gold, not a date.
